Philip Hatter of Thistledown Puppets has a crowded workshop. But, thankfully, that means he has a handful of original puppets available for sale. Check them out here – kinda like taking a walk down Memory Lane.

It should come as no surprise that I would be posting about Puppet Heap. I have before, and chances are I will again. I truly love Puppet Heap’s style, the quality and the thought put into their productions, and now…their TOYS! Toy puppets, in general, do not catch my attention, but Puppet Heap’s new line of hand puppets sure did! They are simply the most original toy hand puppets out there. Check them out…

So here’s the scoop…

This fall, Puppet Heap Playthings will launch their first ever line of hand puppets – Mother Hubbard Among Others. The richly designed collection of hand puppets will be available in stores nationwide and on Amazon.com.

Puppet Heap Playthings is all about inspiring people to share through stories and play. As such, the hand puppets combine traditional storytelling methods with modern technology to literally put the story in your hands. The first line of characters will be based on the Puppet Heap Moving Picture Company short films, “Mother Hubbard Among Others” and “I Knew an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” (www.puppetheap.com). Each puppet will come with a unique code that will unlock a secret window into that character’s world at the Puppet Heap Playthings website. This rich online experience will deepen your relationship with the puppet characters and the world they live in.

Attention NY Puppeteers!

Swazzle is casting NY/Tri-State Area hand and rod puppeteers for a live show that will premiere at FAO Schwarz on 5th Avenue beginning in September. The show will be promoting the “Juno Baby” brand, which is a series of children’s DVDs featuring a cast of puppets who teach the wonders of music. Performances will take place over four Saturdays in September, with 3 to 4 rehearsal days in late August/ early September. Applicants must be available for all performance and rehearsal days. The number of shows per day has yet to be decided.

Due to the short lead time, there will be no auditions, instead please send your resume and/or links to your reels to Artie Esposito at artie@swazzle.com.

Puppet Heap’s “Exit Row”

Puppet Heap has released “Exit Row”, a new comedy web series that joins two air sickness bags, Ralph and Chuck, as they grapple with everything from love, betrayal, friendship, identity, in-flight etiquette, and life ad nauseum from the perspective of a seat back pocket.

Puppeteers James Godwin (Chapelle’s Show, The Muppets, Henson’s Stuffed and Unstrung) and Tim Lagasse (Chapelle’s Show, The Muppets, Sesame Street) lend their inimitable talents to the characters of Ralph and Chuck. Exit Row will premiere on Puppet Heap’s YouTube channel starting NOW, with new installments added each week. (Puppet Heap’s YouTube channel can be found by following the link HERE.)

“Exit Row” is a great example of just how simple AND great a “puppety” idea can be. Long live paper sack (bag) puppets!

IFYW – Goodnight Harvey

Goodnight Harvey is the latest short film produced by IFYW, a collaboration of Josh Self, Orlando Rivera II, and Derek Iaea, and soon to be on the film festival circuit this summer. The film follows “Sam, a puppet skinner’s apprentice, who must confront the realities of his profession when a puppet named Harvey wakes up on the cutting table. With a customer anxious to get Harvey’s hide, Sam must choose whether to set him free, or finish the skinning that has already been started.”

The May 1st premiere of the film at The Dark Room Theater in San Francisco was preceded by…can you guess…a live puppet show! You can check out pictures of the performance here.

Sesame Street and Google

“Can you tell me how to get to…?” is a question near and dear to the hearts of Sesame Street and Google fans alike. As we all know, Novemeber 10, 2009 marks Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary. Happy anniversary! In celebration, starting November 4th, Google has incorporated a famous character from “the Street” in their logo. (Google is known for this, modifying their logo to celebrate certain events, people, and other stuff.) Yesterday Big Bird (or at least his lower half) became part of the Google logo. Today…Cookie Monster! Check it out – www.google.com. I imagine the Google Doodle will continue to say “happy anniversary” right up to the 10th.

If Google is not your preferred search engine, it should be…at least for the next week.
